I did this painting while in Ireland, during my evenings in the hostels and B&B's. I wanted to make this cross very traditional in style, which is why it has the maze patterns (particularly in the cross center) included with the knotwork interlacings. You'll see this sort of combination in many cross designs, especially in the manuscripts like The Lindisfarne Gospels.
