If you are into examples of some of the most beautiful work done by the Celts, this is a must have! If you've done some knotting already, and are finding the regular knotwork books not challenging anymore, try to reproduce some of these! I find it's my main source for ideas, and inspiration, and you'll learn a lot more from studying these than from any other book, I believe. This edition also contains a discussion about the Book of Kells and some of the images meanings, by Bernard Meehan who is the current curator for Manuscripts at Trinity College. Full of good info, and also yummy to look at. (-Cari) The Book of Durrow : A Medieval Masterpiece at Trinity College Dublin Bernard Meehan / Hardcover / Published 1996 Ships in 2-3 days Amazon Price: $19.95 The younger sister to the Book of Kells! Made about a hundred years before the Book of Kells, this doesn't have quite the gala deluxe look of the Book of Kells, but still has very beautiful paintings in it, as well as some great examples of knotwork. (-Cari) The Lindisfarne Gospels Janet Backhouse / Paperback / Published 1995 Ships in 2-3 days Amazon Price: $10.47, Savings: $4.48 (30%) Kept in England, this book was made between when the Book of Durrow and the Book of Kells were made. The knotwork, although still not as splashy as the Book of Kells, is better laid out design-wise. I think this is the second best book to get if you are interested in this time period and manuscript styles. (-Cari) Books of Hours Janet Backhouse / Paperback / Published 1985 Ships in 2-3 days Amazon Price: $13.95 I'm not into this era of illumination myself, but I do think it is extremely beautiful! The various Book of Hours made on the European continent were amazingly decorated, with color and gold, and fantastic scenes of medieval life. Although not really a knotwork book, it is still gorgeous to look at! I saw a copy in Chapters but couldn't buy it with all the others I was getting that day. But lovely lovely stuff.
