The firebird is actually modeled after a pheasant in a Chinese painting, but with the rich red and all gold coloring, he just looked more like a firebird rising from the ashes to me! The phoenix is painted in solid color fields of gold, and I just let the red come through in between the gold instead of drawing outlines on the bird, to keep him as "flaming" as possible. The techique can be kind of tricky, because you're working on a coloured surface and only painting the "fills" with no outlines whatsoever, so if you make a mistake it really shows up! So you have to go very carefully... look twice, paint once! ;-)
