Copper Knot

My inspiration for this piece by a sheet was the most beautiful paper I'd ever seen - bark paper! I still have over a dozen sheets in various colors. The paper is made in Mexico by hand, and is extremely delicate to work with, requiring a variety of treatments I developed to be able to use it without the paint bleeding and obscuring the design. But the wonderful mottled appearance and velvety texture makes it all worthwhile!

The design itself is a small part derived from a pattern on the Shandwick Stone in Ross-Shire, with my own elements of knotwork, spirals, and the dramatic corner arrows. I just love how this one turned out.
