Firebird

A firebird rising from the ashes! The phoenix is painted in solid color fields of gold on the red illustration board. By leaving gaps between the gold areas so the red could show through, I was able to keep him as "flaming" as possible.

The technique can be tricky, because you're working on a coloured surface and only painting the "fills" ---- with no outlines! -- so if you make a mistake it really shows up. You have to work very carefully... look twice, paint once!
